Gender and Achievement

http://www.standards.dfee.gov.uk/genderandachievement

The Gender and Achievement area is aimed at teachers, LEAs and others with an interest in gender differences and related levels of achievement. The area raises the profile of gender issues in schools, shares information on good practice and provides advice on a range of whole school issues that are critical to raising the achievement of boys and girls.

The area can help by providing a presentation of national performance data by gender at each key stage and an overview of recent research on gender and achievement written by Professor Jean Rudduck of Homerton College, Cambridge.

It now incorporates extensive references to gender choice issues in careers, with an emphasis on providing pupils and teachers with pointers to information sources and other advisory organisations, such as the Equal Opportunities Commission.

Key Stage 3 Strategy

The Key Stage 3 National Strategy area

www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/keystage3  contains a number of new items to support schools starting to implement the English and mathematics strands this term:

  section, are a number of Bright Ideas that offer advice from other schools and KS3 Consultants on topics such as Training your department, Raising boys' achievement in writing and The Library and Key Stage 3.

We'll be publishing more items later this term so why don't you bookmark the Updates page http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/keystage3/updates/  which will list new additions?

LEA

http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/lea/

The LEA area will be undergoing a complete update over the coming weeks.

The updated area will consist of sections including Educational Development Plans, Beacon Councils, Local Public Service Agreements and Best Practice.

It now has a section about new models of LEA service delivery, which provides background information to 10 pilot schemes that are examining new ways for LEAs and schools to work together with the private sector to develop new and improved ways to deliver services.

Literacy

The Literacy area of the Standards Site features many resources for teaching writing.

There are online materials to help teachers select quality text

The NLS has also produced Booster Units for Year 5  http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/literacy/publications/?pub_id=427&top_id=0&atcl_id=0    and Year 6 http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/literacy/publications/?pub_id=399&top_id=0&atcl_id=283 7  pupils, which focus on major text types in the NLS Framework for teaching. To strengthen teachers' skills, the Literacy area contains short modules on Grammatical knowledge  (http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/literacy/prof_dev/?pd=ssm

As part of our most recent developments non fiction case studies

 http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/literacy/prof_dev/?pd=casestudies&root_top_id=533   can be found within the professional development area.   The case studies on this site show how teachers have successfully integrated objectives from the NLS Framework with teaching in other curriculum areas. Further case studies covering other curriculum areas will be added as the site develops.

Our new Resources

http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/literacy/teaching_resources/?nls=res

area provides practical support for teaching writing at a whole text level and contains 40 teaching sequences, offering practical teaching approaches for writing narrative, poetry and plays.  All of the material can be downloaded.

16-19 organisation and inspection: a consultation document www.dfes.gov.uk/consultation

We will be setting out our detailed plans for the creation of a coherent, well-balanced 14-19 phase of learning in a separate document in the New Year, but in the meantime we need to take the opportunity presented by an Education Bill to consult on legislative changes to the 14-19 phase.

Improving inspection, improving schools www.dfes.gov.uk/consultation

This consultation paper from OFSTED contains proposals designed to ensure that inspection becomes:

-  more responsive to the priorities of schools and the policies of government;

-  more supportive of school improvement;

-  better informed about the views of parents, pupils and the wider community; and -  better co-ordinated with other inspection and monitoring activity.

There are 16 consultation issues in the paper, each relating to a proposal which follows up one or more of these themes. We should like to know your views on all these issues.  The consultation paper and response form have been sent to all schools (three copies each), all inspectors enrolled by OFSTED, and national organisations.

New York - September 11th, 2001

Message from “A Mother”

I have been thinking of how difficult it must be for American Moms and Dads to explain Tuesday 11th to their kids, when they themselves have no direct experience of Terrorist attack or activity before, sadly unlike us in other countries - here in the UK and the rest of Europe I’m sure we can think of (all too) many awful events from the very recent to those several years ago.

Lorraine Miller of Illinois, who I met and befriended through a yahoo club, is just one example of a Mom   who has to make sense of this tragedy not only for herself but for her children and she has asked me if I  can help by asking all those who are teachers and pupils, parents, grandparents or any other relative who has children at schools in the UK, Europe or anywhere else in the world to write from your school or college to the schools and colleges of the USA giving your support at this time of need.

Go on your local talk radio station and ask others to get involved, write to your newspaper, post messages in your clubs, e-groups and newsgroups! Send letters, stories, poem, pictures - whatever you can! We now have the internet to help us communicate and I’m sure everyone of us knows or has someone in their community who has been affected by the recent tragedy. I’m also sure that there will be kids or adults at  our educational establishments who have friends and relatives in the USA who can contact the schools there and help arrange this. Who knows what goodness and new bonds of friendship can come out of this?

I hope that by encouraging our diverse communities to talk to one another from an early and formative age, these young people - and us adults too! - can maybe gain a greater understanding of one another and a wish for peace so that when our children have kids of their own we will not see events like this being able to happen ever again. Over here ‘on the other side of the pond’, we can’t do much, but we will do what we   can!
