Millennium International Children's

The United Nations Environment Programme's Millennium
International Children's Conference on the Environment
was held in Eastbourne earlier this year. The Conference
gave children the opportunity to be one of 1,000 delegates
from over 100 countries to develop new ideas on protecting
and improving the environment. The delegates produced
a list of Challenges which were presented through UNEP
at the Global Environmental Forum in Malmo, Sweden.

are accountable for careers work and for the development
of self-management and decision-making skills of pupils.
It explains the purpose of careers work, and sets out
legal requirements and expectations of good practice.
It challenges all schools to meet the level of provision
which surveys suggest are needed for effective delivery.
It invites a review of their position against minimum
threshold and other current practice.
The
importance of careers work, linked to PSHE and citizenship,
is stressed as a foundation for the Connexions Service,
which begins in some areas in 2001.

Copies of the year 2001 editions of “Which Way Now?”,
“It’s Your Choice” and “Job File” will be distributed
during November.
“Which Way Now?” leads
Year 9 students through all the stages of making their
option choices at 14.
“It’s Your Choice”
provides Year 10 or 11 students with information
on education and training choices at 16.
“Job File” contains
descriptions of approximately 100 occupations and their
entry qualifications.
Interactive versions will be available on the internet
shortly at www.dfee.gov.uk/wwn.htm and www.dfee.gov.uk/iyc.htm
respectively. The information contained in the Job File
will be accessible via the Connexions Card website at
http://www.connexionscard.gov.uk
The websites have been designed to meet Government
standards on accessibility by those with visual impairment
and include text-only versions that can be read by speaking
browser.
Teachers
Notes for Which Way Now? and It’s Your Choice have also
been produced, and give a brief synopsis of the content
of the booklets, highlight key points to remember and
suggest ways in which the booklets can be used. They will
be made available via the websites.

This
international competition, organised by the Association
de Prevention Pour une Meilleure Citoyennet des Jeunes
(AMPCJ), is open to groups of 12 to 18 year olds, who
must devise:

a
European Citizen Charter for Young People
·
a
mascot to symbolise European Citizenship
·
a
letter to the ‘Fathers of Europe’ telling them how young
people see Europe.
The
selection criteria will be originality, creativity, relevance
and aesthetics.
Groups must register by 20 November 2000 and entries
must be in by 16 February 2001. Entries should be confirmed
by letter or fax and entered provisionally on the website
The
prizes are to present the Charter to the Parliament and
enjoy a thematic holiday in the Alsace Region – one winning
group per country.
Winners will be announced on 9th May 2001
– (Europe Day) at a citizenship fete. Participants may
attend but only winners have their costs covered.

peer mediation and circle time.
These structures improve school life for the whole school
