Recommended Key Stage Three Books

Welcome to Design in the Making for 11-14 year-olds, which offers comprehensive coverage of the National Curriculum through separate focus areas.

By recognising the popularity and success of the separate focus areas approach in schools, Design in the Making offers you a course that is easy to plan and implement, coupled with the assurance that it provides everything your pupils need to know to produce high quality outcomes in their designing and making.

The Pupil's Books

Provide comprehensive coverage of the revised National Curriculum through tried and tested activities and new ideas;
Support the development of design skills in the context of making;

Differentiate major tasks and homework activities so that pupils can develop skills and competence regardless of their ability or prior knowledge;
Include step-by-step guidance through making activities;

Offer smooth progression throughout Key Stage 3, with each section building on knowledge and skills learnt before;

Are split into sections, to ensure that the course can be used whatever the timetabling arrangements;
Give safety advice throughout;
Start each section with objectives that are linked to the Programme of Study;
Put design and technology into a real-world context;
Include regular self-assessment and formal assessment opportunities.

The Teacher's Guides:

Include a series of lesson plans that link to the topics in the Pupil's Books. Each lesson plan provides a structured approach to teaching a particular topic;
Provide teaching objectives for each lesson;

Give support for non-specialists and supply teachers;
Include step-by-step guidance through making activities;

Include a series of worksheets to support each lesson and activity;

Provide a number of general skills worksheets that can be used throughout the course;

Have a section on preparing for Ofsted and guidance on what inspectors are looking for;
Give ideas on how to develop design skills.

THE FOUR KEY PRINCIPLES OF THE NEW KS3 STRATEGY

· Expectations
Establishing high expectations for all pupils and setting challenging targets for them to achieve.

· Progression
Strengthening the transition from Key Stage 2 so that pupils do not 'fall back' in Year 7, and ensuring good progression in teaching and learning across Key Stage 3.

· Engagement
Promoting approaches to teaching and learning that engage and motivate pupils and demand their active participation.

· Transformation
Strengthening teaching and learning through a programme of professional development and practical support.
